Games Day Heads Activities By NANCY NEWBOURNE On Friday and Saturday, October 12 and I 3, Fall officially comes to Flagler with the annual Fall Weekend. T he weekend begins on Friday with a Student Government Association sponsored talent show. The competition will be held in the East Veni<lo Room. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 acts. Saturday is Games Day. All of the "games of skill." will be held on the grass area between the pool and the tennis courts. Teams consisting of 6 men and 6 women will be competing for a cash prize. Tqe events of the day are traditionally kept secret until the morning of Games Day. Kris Allison, chairperson of the Games Day Committee, and the students who have volunteered to officiate will be informing all teams what the events will be and the rules governing them. Fall Weekend will come to a close after the dance Saturday night. ''The dance will be the Senior class service project,'' stated Andy McRae, President of SGA. The weekend promises to be an ideal way to slip from the hot, humid days of Summer to the cool, refreshing days of Fall . Courts Ready After Rain Delay by JOHN MONEYPENNY Flagler College 's tennis courts finally appear to be on their way to completion, no thanks to the daily rains we've been having for the past month. Resurfacing of the courts began in late August, which should have predicated an early September finish. However, it has rained so often that the courts have very rarely had sufficient time to thoroughly dry out. There have been daily forecasts of at least a 50 percent chance of rain for the past month. Consequently, the workmen have had to be very cautious and particular about the days they chose to renovate because of the water soluable material the courts are made of. According to working supervisor Hubert Williams, the flint coated, acrylic courts, cost approximately $12,000 each. Williams and his crew came down to the courts almost every day for the past month, including Saturdays and Sundays, only to be sent back home by the frequent showers. ' 'I 've been working in the tennis court construction business for the past 20 years," said Williams, " and this has got to be one of the most frustrating jobs I've encountered.'' Men's tennis coach, Peter Scott, echoed Williams frustration . ' 'The unusually rainy weather has put a damper on the team's work-out sessions," observed Scott. "We' ve been getting only about two hours of practice because of the ava_ilability of town courts.'' · "However, we have a mature, highly motivated group of young men who are doing their best to get the most out of our work-out schedule.'' Walter Shinn, the women's tennis coach, is just as anxious to hit the new courts. ''We are really thankful for the use of the Ponce de Leon Lodge courts,'' said Shinn, "but, I will be elated when we can finally get our program moving on the new courts.' ' So, all of you potential John McEnroe's, Chris Everet 's and Bjorn Borg's, break out those rackets and last year 's can of dead tennis balls .and start tearing up those courts --------figuratively that is! ·
